La Ligne pieces cleaned and hand-finished by Alex's Dry Cleaning Valet.
Heritage & Expertise
La Ligne, Cared For by Alex's Team
La Ligne was founded in New York in 2016 by former Vogue editors Valerie Macaulay and Meredith Melling with CEO Molly Howard, built around the marinière — the French naval stripe — reimagined as elevated everyday and evening wear. The label is celebrated for its signature 7-ply wool-cashmere Marin sweater and for dresses and gowns that pair clean tailoring with that unmistakable stripe.
La Ligne's wool-cashmere blends can felt, pill, and shrink in ordinary wash water, and aggressive cleaning blurs the precise stripe registration or leaves silk and viscose eveningwear water-spotted and limp. Alex's specializes in exactly this kind of care — protecting the fiber and the line.
Specialist Care
How Alex's Cares for La Ligne
Each La Ligne piece is inspected and cleaned by hand-attentive method, matched to its specific fiber and construction, then pressed to restore the stripe and silhouette intact.
Marinière stripe registration
We block and press each striped piece so the navy-and-cream stripes stay aligned at the shoulders, side seams, and hem — never crushed or skewed by a hot, heavy press.
7-ply wool-cashmere knits
La Ligne's signature Marin knits are cleaned in a controlled, low-agitation process that prevents felting, shrinkage, and pilling, then steam-finished to bring the cashmere hand back to soft.
Silk and viscose eveningwear
Gowns and evening dresses are tested for colorfastness and water-sensitivity first, then gently solvent- or hand-cleaned so the drape stays fluid and the fabric never water-spots or loses body.
Clean French-cut tailoring
We hand-finish necklines, dropped shoulders, and dress seams so the tailored line La Ligne is known for holds its shape rather than going soft or distorted.
Delicate trims and closures
Buttons, hidden zippers, and any beadwork on evening pieces are protected during cleaning and pressing so nothing snags, dulls, or pulls away.

Common Questions
La Ligne Garment Care FAQ
Can La Ligne's wool-cashmere Marin sweaters be dry cleaned without shrinking or pilling?
Yes. La Ligne's 7-ply wool-cashmere knits should never go through a home wash, where they felt and shrink. Alex's cleans them in a controlled, low-agitation process and steam-finishes by hand to keep the cashmere soft, prevent pilling, and hold the stripe alignment. We treat the Marin and Marini knits as the delicate fiber blends they are, not as ordinary sweaters.
How do I get a La Ligne gown or dress cleaned in San Francisco without leaving home?
Alex's is a door-to-door valet serving San Francisco and the Bay Area — we come to you for both pickup and delivery. Simply text 415-338-9318 to schedule a pickup, and we'll collect your La Ligne dresses, gowns, and knits, clean each piece by its specific fiber, and return them pressed and ready to wear.
Will dry cleaning ruin the navy-and-cream stripes on my La Ligne pieces?
No — when done correctly. The risk with the marinière stripe is that careless cleaning and a heavy press can blur the stripe registration or distort the knit. Alex's blocks and hand-presses each striped piece so the stripes stay aligned at the shoulders, seams, and hem, preserving the crisp French-naval look La Ligne is built on. A family practice since 1984, we finish every La Ligne garment by hand.
