Heritage & Expertise
Herno, Cared For by Alex's Team
Founded in 1948 in Lesa, on the shore of Lake Maggiore, Herno took its name from the Erno river and built its reputation on the raincoat — Giuseppe Marenzi and Alessandra Diana's castor-oil-treated cotton that could stand up to the lake region's rain. Today Herno is regarded as a first word in luxury Italian outerwear, celebrated for marrying refined tailoring with serious technical performance: laminated Laminar shells, ultralight down, and nylon bonded to cashmere or wool.
That same engineering is what makes Herno so easy to ruin in the wrong hands. Harsh solvents strip the laminated membranes and durable water-repellent finish; aggressive heat melts bonded nylon and collapses goose-down loft permanently. Alex's has specialized in exactly this kind of garment since 1984 — restoring water-repellency and reviving loft rather than destroying them.
Specialist Care
How Alex's Cares for Herno
We clean each Herno piece according to its construction — down, laminated shell, or bonded fabric — using gentle methods that preserve loft, waterproofing, and the crisp tailored line.
Laminar laminated shells
Herno's Laminar technology bonds a waterproof, breathable membrane to the outer fabric. We clean these shells with low-impact methods and reproof the durable water-repellent finish so beading and breathability return rather than washing away.
Ultralight goose down
Herno's signature is down outerwear that stays light and lofted. We dry and finish down fills at controlled low heat so the clusters re-loft fully — never the high heat that mats and flattens them permanently.
Bonded nylon-and-cashmere
Herno fuses technical nylon to cashmere or wool for its hybrid coats and Il Mio jackets. We treat these as the heat-sensitive laminates they are, avoiding the pressing temperatures that delaminate the bond and pucker the face fabric.
Tailored outerwear silhouette
Herno's coats are cut like tailoring, not sportswear. We hand-finish collars, lapels, and shoulders to restore the structured line, and steam rather than crush so the garment keeps its sculpted drape.
Sealed seams and trims
Taped seams, water-resistant zippers, and minimalist hardware define a Herno shell. We protect the seam tape and finish around closures so the waterproof integrity stays sealed and the trims stay pristine.

Common Questions
Herno Garment Care FAQ
Do you pick up Herno coats for cleaning in San Francisco?
Yes. Alex's Dry Cleaning Valet has been door-to-door across San Francisco and the Bay Area since 1984 — We collect your Herno coats and jackets from your home, clean and finish them, and deliver them back to your doorstep. Text 415-338-9318 to schedule a pickup.
Can a Herno down jacket be dry cleaned without ruining the fill?
It depends on the piece. Many Herno down jackets use laminated or bonded shells that can be damaged by standard dry-cleaning solvents and heat. We assess each garment's construction first, then use the gentle, low-heat method appropriate to that piece so the goose-down re-lofts and stays light instead of matting flat.
Will cleaning remove the water-repellency on my Herno Laminar shell?
Not the way we do it. Ordinary cleaning can strip a Herno Laminar shell's durable water-repellent finish and dull its breathable membrane. We clean these technical shells with low-impact methods and reproof the DWR finish afterward, so water beads off and the membrane keeps breathing — restoring the performance you bought it for, not removing it.
