Heritage & Expertise
Isaia, Cared For by Alex's Team
Founded in Naples in 1920 by Enrico Isaia, the house became one of Italy's storied tailoring names by perfecting the Neapolitan soft-shoulder jacket — high armholes, a shirt-style spalla camicia shoulder, the little boat-shaped barchetta chest pocket, and grinze pleats gathered at the sleevehead. The red coral lapel pin, a Neapolitan good-luck charm, marks every piece.
That softness is its fragility: Isaia jackets are built with minimal canvassing and miles of hand-stitching, so machine pressing or harsh chemical cleaning will crush the shoulder roll, glaze the lapel, and pull the hand-sewn buttonholes out of true — damage that is permanent. Alex's specializes in exactly this construction, finishing each Isaia by hand so the garment returns the way Naples intended.
Specialist Care
How Alex's Cares for Isaia
Every Isaia is cleaned gently and pressed entirely by hand, with the soft shoulder, lapel roll, and barchetta pocket steamed back into shape rather than flattened under a machine.
Spalla camicia soft shoulder
Isaia's shirt-style shoulder has no padding to hide behind, so we never machine-press it. We hand-steam the gathered grinze at the sleevehead and re-roll the shoulder by hand, keeping the soft, natural line that defines a Neapolitan jacket.
Aquaspider Super 160s wool
Isaia's proprietary Aquaspider cloth is a featherweight, water-resistant Super 160s spun from roughly 15-micron fiber — exquisite but heat-sensitive. We clean it gently and press at low temperature so the wool keeps its luster and never glazes or goes shiny.
Hand-rolled lapel and barchetta pocket
The lapel's three-dimensional roll and the boat-shaped barchetta chest pocket are sculpted by hand and easily crushed flat. We finish both by hand, steaming the curve back into the lapel and the gentle bow into the barchetta.
Hand-sewn buttonholes and pick stitching
Isaia's Milanese buttonholes, working surgeon's cuffs, and lapel pick stitching are all done by hand. We clean and press around this handwork so the stitches stay taut and the buttonholes keep their crisp, raised silhouette.
Half-canvas Neapolitan construction
The minimal floating canvas that gives an Isaia its drape can ripple or bubble if cleaned carelessly. We treat the chest piece gently and hand-finish the front so the canvas and cloth stay married and the jacket falls clean from the shoulder.

Common Questions
Isaia Garment Care FAQ
How should an Isaia suit be cleaned without ruining the soft Neapolitan shoulder?
An Isaia should be dry cleaned sparingly and finished entirely by hand — never run through a machine press, which crushes the spalla camicia shoulder, the grinze sleevehead pleats, and the hand-rolled lapel. Alex's Dry Cleaning Valet cleans each Isaia gently, then hand-steams and re-rolls the shoulder, lapel, and barchetta pocket so the jacket keeps the soft, natural line Naples built into it. Spot-clean small marks between cleanings and let the garment rest on a wide wooden hanger rather than cleaning it after every wear.
Can you pick up my Isaia in San Francisco — there's right?
Correct — Alex's never asks you to drop anything off. We are a door-to-door dry cleaning valet serving San Francisco and the wider Bay Area, with white-glove pickup and delivery straight to your home or office. Family-run since 1984, we handle your Isaia tailoring from the moment it leaves your closet to the moment it returns pressed by hand. Simply text 415-338-9318 to schedule a pickup.
Will dry cleaning make my Aquaspider wool jacket shiny or flatten the lapel?
Not when it's done correctly. Isaia's Aquaspider Super 160s is a fine, heat-sensitive wool that will glaze and go shiny under a hot machine press, and the hand-rolled lapel will flatten. Alex's cleans Aquaspider gently and presses it by hand at low temperature, steaming the lapel roll and barchetta pocket back into shape so the cloth keeps its luster and the jacket its three-dimensional finish — exactly as it left the Casalnuovo workrooms.
