Heritage & Expertise
Sferra, Cared For by Alex's Team
Sferra traces its roots to 1891, when Gennaro Sferra brought his hand-loomed Italian linens to the United States, and the house has been synonymous with the finest bed and table linens ever since. Sferra is celebrated for its extra-long-staple Egyptian cotton and pure Italian linen, woven to exceptional thread counts (it was the first house to weave bed linens from legendary Giza 45, among the rarest cotton on earth) and finished with delicate hemstitching, hand-embroidery, and woven jacquard borders.
That refinement is also why improper cleaning is so unforgiving: high-thread-count percale and sateen lose their hand and luster under hot water, chlorine, and aggressive agitation; pure linen scorches and yellows when over-pressed; and hemstitched and embroidered borders snag or pull in a commercial tumbler. Alex's specializes in exactly this work — gentle, fiber-correct laundering and meticulous hand-finishing that preserves the weave for decades.
Specialist Care
How Alex's Cares for Sferra
We launder each Sferra piece by hand with pH-balanced, chlorine-free care, then press and fold every hem, border, and monogram individually so your linens come back hotel-crisp without a thread out of place.
Extra-long-staple Egyptian cotton
We wash Sferra's percale and sateen in cool, soft water with mild, residue-free detergent so the long fibers keep their signature smoothness and sheen instead of pilling or graying.
Pure Italian linen
Linen scorches and yellows when over-heated, so we dampen and press it at the correct temperature, smoothing every wrinkle without crushing the natural slubby texture that makes Sferra linen breathe and last.
High thread count & sateen luster
High-count sateen dulls under chlorine and hard agitation; we use gentle, chlorine-free laundering that protects the tight weave and keeps the luminous sheen Sferra is known for.
Hemstitching & embroidered borders
Delicate hemstitched and hand-embroidered borders snag in commercial machines, so we hand-handle every edge, inspect the openwork, and press borders flat so nothing pulls or frays.
Woven jacquard & monograms
Jacquard patterns and custom monograms are pressed individually by hand to keep the raised weave defined and the lettering crisp, never flattened or distorted by bulk processing.

Common Questions
Sferra Garment Care FAQ
How does Alex's pick up and return my Sferra linens in San Francisco?
Alex's is a door-to-door dry cleaning valet — we come to you. Simply text 415-338-9318 to schedule a pickup anywhere in San Francisco or the greater Bay Area, and we collect your Sferra bed linens, table linens, and throws from your door and return them pressed, folded, and ready to use. Founded in 1984, we have built our service entirely around bringing white-glove care to your home.
Can high-thread-count Sferra sheets be safely cleaned, or will they lose their softness?
They can be cleaned beautifully when handled correctly. Sferra's extra-long-staple Egyptian cotton actually grows softer with proper laundering, but it is damaged by hot water, chlorine bleach, and harsh agitation, which break down the fibers and dull sateen weaves. We launder in cool, soft water with gentle, chlorine-free detergent and hand-finish each piece, so your sheets return softer and more lustrous rather than worn.
Will the hemstitching and embroidery on my Sferra linens be protected during cleaning?
Yes. Sferra's hemstitched openwork, hand-embroidery, and woven jacquard borders are exactly the details that snag, pull, or fray in commercial tumblers. We hand-handle every edge, inspect the decorative work before and after cleaning, and press each border and monogram individually so the craftsmanship stays intact for years.
