Loro Piana, Cared For by Alex's Team

Founded in 1924 in Quarona, in the Italian Piedmont, Loro Piana grew from a family of wool merchants whose trade reached back to the early 1800s into the world's foremost authority on rare natural fibers. The house is celebrated for sourcing the finest cashmere, baby cashmere, and vicuña on earth — controlling its supply from herd to finished knit — and for fine-gauge construction so soft and lightweight it is unmistakable to the touch.

These same qualities make Loro Piana knitwear unforgiving of careless cleaning. Vicuña and baby cashmere fibers are exceptionally fine and delicate, and improper agitation, heat, or harsh solvent can felt, shrink, or permanently dull a garment whose fiber a herd needs years to yield. Alex's specializes in exactly this kind of precise, fiber-first care.

How Alex's Cares for Loro Piana

Every Loro Piana knit is cleaned by hand using gentle, fiber-appropriate methods, then carefully reblocked to its original dimensions and finished without crushing the loft of the cashmere.

Baby cashmere

The downy under-fleece of Hircus goat kids, combed only once in early life and yielding just a few grams per animal, is the softest fiber Loro Piana works with — we clean it with the lowest possible agitation and never machine-tumble, preserving its weightless hand.

Vicuña fiber

Vicuña is among the rarest natural fibers on earth; the wild animal can be shorn only once every two to three years and yields only about 120 to 200 grams of fleece each time. We treat these pieces individually by hand, protecting both the fineness and the natural undyed tones the fiber is prized for.

Fine-gauge knit construction

Loro Piana's lightweight, tightly knit gauges can stretch or pill if mishandled; we hand-clean, then lay flat and reblock each piece to its exact original measurements rather than hanging it to dry.

Signature soft hand and loft

The hallmark of a Loro Piana knit is its weightless, lofty surface, which is easily flattened by heat and pressure; we finish without harsh pressing, restoring the natural loft and drape that define a piece straight from the box.

Undyed natural colors

Many Loro Piana knits rely on the fiber's own undyed beige, fawn, and grey tones; we use methods that lift soil without stripping or graying these delicate natural shades.

Why Loro Piana Deserves a Specialist

Cashmere is prone to irreversible felting and stretching under high heat or harsh detergents. Expert hand-finishing — no compression, no pilling — is the only correct approach for Loro Piana or Brunello Cucinelli knitwear.

Vicuña — the world's rarest luxury wool, at $300 per ounce of spun yarn — requires specialists who understand its 11–13 micron fiber structure. Alex's Team is trained to handle it without altering its natural color or fiber integrity.

Alex's Team handles garments from over 30 luxury brands — Brunello Cucinelli, Loro Piana, Kiton, Hermès, Charvet, and Tom Ford among them.

Loro Piana Garment Care FAQ

How do you clean Loro Piana cashmere and vicuña without ruining it?

We hand-clean Loro Piana knitwear using gentle, fiber-appropriate methods at low agitation and low heat, never machine-tumbling the delicate cashmere or vicuña. After cleaning, each piece is laid flat and reblocked to its original measurements, then finished without harsh pressing so the natural loft and softness of the fiber are fully preserved. This protects against the felting, shrinking, and pilling that improper cleaning causes in fine-gauge knits.

Do you offer door-to-door pickup for Loro Piana knitwear in San Francisco?

Yes. Alex's Dry Cleaning Valet comes to you — we come directly to your door throughout San Francisco and the Bay Area to collect and return your Loro Piana sweaters and knits. Simply text 415-338-9318 to schedule a pickup, and we handle everything from there with white-glove care, just as we have since 1984.

Can you remove pilling and restore the softness of a worn Loro Piana sweater?

Yes. As part of our hand care we gently de-pill Loro Piana cashmere and baby cashmere, lift soil without stripping the fiber's natural oils or undyed tones, and reblock and finish the piece to restore its original shape, loft, and softness. Wear-related fuzzing on fine-gauge knits is exactly the kind of restoration our by-hand process is built for.
