Peter Millar, Cared For by Alex's Team

Peter Millar was founded in 2001 in Raleigh, North Carolina, beginning with a single luxury cashmere sweater and building its reputation on refined American sportswear and luxury knitwear — Italian-milled cashmere, soft pima cotton, and performance fabrics that bridge the worlds of country club, course, and city. The brand is celebrated for its understated elegance and the exceptional hand of its sweaters and layering pieces.

Fine-gauge cashmere and merino are easily ruined by the wrong process: aggressive heat and agitation cause irreversible shrinkage, felting, and pilling, while harsh solvents strip the natural oils that give the fiber its softness. Alex's specializes in exactly this kind of delicate knitwear, treating each piece by hand to protect its loft and shape.

How Alex's Cares for Peter Millar

Each Peter Millar piece is inspected, hand-treated for spots, gently cleaned to preserve fiber softness, and hand-blocked back to its original shape before pressing.

Italian-milled cashmere

We clean cashmere sweaters cold and gentle, never with the heat or agitation that felts and shrinks the fiber, then dry them flat so the loft and hand stay intact.

Fine-gauge knit structure

Delicate knits are hand-blocked back to their exact measurements after cleaning so the body, cuffs, and hem never stretch out or sag.

Pima and supima cotton knits

Soft cotton pieces are washed and finished to keep their smooth surface and color depth, avoiding the dulling and graying that harsh processing causes.

Pilling control

Every sweater is hand-inspected and de-pilled where needed, removing the fuzz that collects at cuffs and underarms so the knit looks new again.

Quarter-zip and trim finishing

Zippers, plackets, and ribbed collars are pressed and shaped by hand so the hardware lies flat and the trim holds its crisp line.

Why Peter Millar Deserves a Specialist

Cashmere is prone to irreversible felting and stretching under high heat or harsh detergents. Expert hand-finishing — no compression, no pilling — is the only correct approach for Loro Piana or Brunello Cucinelli knitwear.

Vicuña — the world's rarest luxury wool, at $300 per ounce of spun yarn — requires specialists who understand its 11–13 micron fiber structure. Alex's Team is trained to handle it without altering its natural color or fiber integrity.

Alex's Team handles garments from over 30 luxury brands — Brunello Cucinelli, Loro Piana, Kiton, Hermès, Charvet, and Tom Ford among them.

Peter Millar Garment Care FAQ

How do you clean Peter Millar cashmere without shrinking or felting it?

Cashmere felts and shrinks permanently when exposed to heat and agitation, so we never machine-process it that way. Each Peter Millar cashmere sweater is treated by hand using a gentle, cold, low-agitation method that protects the fiber's natural oils, then dried flat and hand-blocked back to its original measurements. This preserves the soft hand and loft the brand is known for and prevents the felting and stretching that ruin fine knitwear.

Can you remove pilling from my Peter Millar sweaters?

Yes. Pilling is normal friction wear on cashmere and merino, and it gathers at the cuffs, underarms, and sides. As part of our knitwear service we hand-inspect each Peter Millar piece and carefully de-pill it, lifting away the fuzz without damaging the knit so the surface looks smooth and new again.
