Heritage & Expertise
Scandia Home, Cared For by Alex's Team
Scandia Home was founded in 1971 when its Seattle "Scandia Down Ensemble" introduced the European art of dressing the bed — lofty, baffle-box down comforters paired with fine European-milled linens — to American homes. Today its goose-down comforters are hand-filled and baffle-box constructed in fill powers up to 800–850, wrapped in Austrian cotton nano-sateen and percale, and RDS-certified for ethically sourced down.
That same construction is what makes Scandia Home unforgiving of careless cleaning: high-temperature machine processing strips the natural oils from down clusters and collapses their loft permanently, while harsh solvents can flatten or yellow the delicate sateen shell and unstitch the baffle walls. Caring for hand-filled European down is exactly the work Alex's has specialized in for four decades.
Specialist Care
How Alex's Cares for Scandia Home
We clean each Scandia Home piece by hand using gentle, low-temperature methods that lift soil and oils while preserving the down's loft, the baffle-box structure, and the silken hand of the European shell.
Hand-filled goose down
Scandia Home comforters carry up to 800–850 fill-power goose down whose loft is its entire value. We clean cool and dry thoroughly so down clusters re-open fully and the comforter regains its full volume, never the flattened, clumped fill that high heat leaves behind.
Baffle-box construction
The internal baffle walls that hold down evenly in place are stitched, not glued, and can rupture under aggressive agitation. We handle each comforter gently and inspect the baffle and double-handstitched sateen piping before it leaves us.
Austrian cotton nano-sateen shell
Scandia Home's whisper-weight sateen and percale shells are woven in European mills and glaze or yellow under harsh solvents. We use pH-balanced, gentle methods that keep the shell's silky finish and crisp hand intact.
RDS-certified down pillows
Down and down-alternative Scandia Home pillows lose their support when over-processed or under-dried. We refresh them at low temperature and dry them completely to restore fill and eliminate any risk of mildew within the casing.
European fine linens & throws
High-thread-count Scandia Home sheeting, duvet covers, and cashmere or down throws are pressed and finished by hand so they return crisp, soft, and free of the over-pressed sheen that diminishes fine cotton and cashmere.

Common Questions
Scandia Home Garment Care FAQ
Can a Scandia Home down comforter be dry cleaned, or should it be washed?
Scandia Home recommends professional cleaning for its down comforters, and that is precisely what protects them. The risk is never the cleaning itself but the heat and agitation: high-temperature machine laundering and tumble-drying strip the down's natural oils and permanently collapse its loft. Alex's cleans Scandia Home comforters by hand at low temperature and dries them slowly and completely so the down re-lofts to full volume and the baffle-box construction stays intact.
How does Alex's pick up and return my Scandia Home bedding in San Francisco?
Alex's is a door-to-door valet — we come to you. Simply call 415-338-9318 to schedule a pickup anywhere in San Francisco or the greater Bay Area, and we collect your Scandia Home comforters, pillows, and linens from your door and return them cleaned, lofted, and folded. Family-run since 1984, we handle fine bedding the way it was meant to be handled.
My Scandia Home comforter has lost its fluff and feels flat. Can that be restored?
Often, yes. Flattening usually comes from compressed, oil-stripped down or down that was never dried fully after a previous cleaning. Our low-temperature hand process cleans the down clusters and dries them thoroughly so they re-open and regain loft, and we inspect the baffle-box walls and sateen piping for any damage. We will tell you honestly whether a piece can be fully revived before we proceed.
