Icelandic Down Couture Dry Cleaning & Care in San Francisco

Alex's cares for Icelandic Down eiderdown comforters, pillows, and baby duvets the way this rare fill deserves — picked up from your home or workplace across San Francisco and the Bay Area, cleaned so the down can loft again, and returned ready for the bed.

Icelandic Down, Cared For by Alex's Team

Icelandic Down is a family company founded in 2019 by Ragna Óskarsdóttir in Borgarfjörður, Iceland. The house makes bedding to order from 100% Icelandic eiderdown, gathered from the nests of wild eider ducks after the birds leave. Iceland has protected those ducks since 1847, and each comforter ships with an Icelandic government certificate of the down.

The range is small and specific. The eiderdown comforter and the eiderdown duvet are the same piece: a handmade baffle-box shell, in a German cotton sateen of 475 threads or a silk of 442 threads, filled light, medium, or warm, in standard sizes or to the customer's measurements. Eiderdown pillows come in standard, queen, king, and European sizes, in soft, medium, and firm fills. There is also an eiderdown baby duvet. Icelandic Down does not sell sheets or duvet covers. The company asks that a wash, when one is needed, go to a cleaner experienced with down, because eiderdown takes longer to dry than ordinary down and a poor wash flattens it.

That is the work Alex's does. Down bedding is cleaned and re-lofted, then dried all the way through so the fill expands again instead of clumping in the baffle boxes.

What a Client Said

I'm blown away by the exceptional service Alex's did with my Eiderdown comforter. Picked up and delivered back to my work place. I'd been putting off dealing with getting it cleaned for months. They made my experience effortless and the price was very reasonable. They will get more of my business, and I have been letting coworkers know. Many thanks.

How Alex's Cares for Icelandic Down

Each Icelandic Down piece is cleaned for the shell it is made of and dried until the eiderdown has lofted again, then returned to your door.

100% Icelandic eiderdown

Eiderdown is gathered, not plucked, and there is very little of it each year. We clean it without crushing the clusters, then dry it fully so the fill expands back to the loft you bought.

Baffle-box comforters and duvets

The comforter is built in 24 to 60 hand-stitched boxes so the down stays even. We finish the piece so the fill is spread through those boxes again, not packed into one end.

Cotton sateen or silk shell

The cotton shell is a 475-thread German sateen. The silk shell is 442 threads. We match the cleaning to that cloth so the sateen keeps its hand and the silk is not water-spotted.

Eiderdown pillows

Pillows are filled soft, medium, or firm in standard, queen, king, and European sizes. We clean them so they keep the support you chose, then dry them until the fill has recovered.

Baby duvet

The baby duvet is the same Icelandic eiderdown in a smaller piece. We handle it on its own, with the same full dry, and return it ready for the crib.

Why Icelandic Down Deserves a Specialist

For fine home linens, Alex's cares for Sferra, Matouk, Frette, Pratesi, Anichini, Scandia Home, and Yves Delorme — the standard for luxury residences and estate households.

Frette, Sferra, and Pratesi all require professional care for their top-of-bed pieces. Thread count is not destroyed by use — it is destroyed by incorrect cleaning.

Residents of the Four Seasons Residences, St. Regis Residences, and Millennium Tower in San Francisco trust Alex's for their garment care.

Icelandic Down Garment Care Frequently Asked Questions

Can Alex's clean an Icelandic Down eiderdown comforter?

Yes. An Icelandic Down comforter is 100% Icelandic eiderdown in a cotton sateen or silk baffle-box shell, and it needs a cleaner who will dry it all the way through. Alex's cleans down bedding and re-lofts it, then returns it to your door. Icelandic Down itself asks that a wash go to a professional experienced with down. Call 415-338-9318 to schedule a pickup anywhere in San Francisco or the Bay Area, including a workplace.

Do you also clean Icelandic Down pillows and the baby duvet?

Yes. Icelandic Down's other pieces are the eiderdown pillow, in standard, queen, king, and European sizes and in soft, medium, or firm fills, and the eiderdown baby duvet. We clean those the same way: protect the shell, and dry the fill until it has lofted again. The house does not make sheets or duvet covers. Those, if you have them from another maker, are cared for with the rest of your linens.

Will cleaning flatten the eiderdown?

A short dry will. Eiderdown holds air in fine clusters, and it takes longer to dry than ordinary goose down. If it comes out of the dryer still damp inside, the fill clumps and the comforter lies flat. We keep drying until the piece has expanded again and the fill sits evenly in the baffle boxes.
